And now the latest site for his blues photos was in Salo at Kisko kivimakasiinit, 3 to 26 June (Stone magazins, Toijantie 14, 25450 Kisko).

When gigging the line-up is primarily Puurtinen – Kuloniemi – J Sees Pekka Rajamäki (bass) – Steinway Salonen (drums).
Ladies on the disc. The Finnish rhythm and blues field inclined to the 50’s style has recently received enforcements in several international-level female vocalist, as well as groups around them, which have also made their mark on recordings. Fat Chance with their vocalist Ria Korhola, operating on the Helsinki metropolitan area, has released their debut album “Right On Time” (Goofin ‘Records). The album launched at the end of April “Summer Bride” (El Toro Records) by Saana Koskinen aka Molly Moonstone has already garnered plenty of incense around the world, as well as, Tina Bednoff & The Cocktailers’ first long play album “Jump, Sister, Jump” by El Toro Records has seen the light of day. SaraLee’s “Queen Of Your Heart” was released in June by the German Rhythm Bomb label with a lot of praise. Turku-based Elli Maple commands the Shoebox Revue and they have also brought to the public in June an album tittled “Shoebox Revue” (Goofin ‘Records) from their studio sessions.
Heavier blues rock bites the Finns. Founded in 2012, Nurmijärvi-based Blue Eyed Sons (vocalist Joel Hellström) cultivate on their debut-CD-EP titled “Crawl To The Shade” those psychrock influences of the ’60s and’ 70s from Doors to Led Zeppelin and further to Black Sabbath. The Helsinki-based trio Juniper Inc follows the suit on their album of the same name (Banana Sounds Records), where it provides Zeppelin sounds of the 70’s added with hints to blues, and similar sounds are provided by Kaleidobolt from the Helsinki metropolitan area. This heavy-sounding band fronted by Sampo Kääriäinen (guitarist), Marco Menestrin (singer, bassist) and Valtteri Lindholm (drummer) has been together for a few years, but it seems they have already reached the international concert arenas in their touring. The band has released two albums so far, by the Pink Tank label; “Kaleidobolt” (2015) and most recently, “The Zenith Cracks” (2016). Also, Lobster coming from Seinäjoki-Pori axis sticks mainly to metal pop, but slips momentarily on their new album “Carousel” (Top Records) over to a heavy blues rock sound. The Tornio-based southern rock band Free Ride has released music since the early 2000s. The trio fronted by guitarist-singer Tapsa Ollonen is now part of the Turenki Records’ ever-growing roster. The group released on June 10, its first Turenki product, and all in all, the third album titled “World Of Fools”. Ben Granfelt’s investment in the summer season record markets, is a three-CD package “Time Flies When You’re Playing the Guitar” (Sprucefield Records) containing material from his Megamania albums: “The Truth” (1994), “Radio Friendly” (1996), “E.G.O” (1999) and “All I Want to Be” (2001), as well as, one disc of live recordings from the years 1996-2003.
Dylan interpretations in Finnish language. Wentus Blues Band is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and has released its second disc “Dylan Suomeksi” (Dylan in Finnish) (Ramasound Records), where this Kokkola-based band with soloist guests interpret Bob Dylan’s (75 years in May) songs in Finnish langue – guests being Aija Puurtinen & Esa Kuloniemi, Paleface, Eero Raittinen, Tero Pulkkinen, Heikki Silvennoinen, Anssi Kela, Mika Kuokkanen & Ninni Poijärvi, Mariska, Jukka Gustavson, J. Karjalainen, Pelle Million and Kauko Röyhkä. The Paleface track Kuoleman kauppiaat (Masters Of War) in the collection is available as a video, which can be viewed on Youtube.
The landlord of Väärnin Pappila (Väärni Vicarage, in Lapinlahti) made a blues album. Jarkka Rissanen (guitarist) has released with his Tonal Box trio of guitar-tuba-drums a CD titled “The 20th Century Box” (Propaganda Records). He has played, among others, with Pepe Ahlqvist, Eero Raittinen, Oiling Boiling, Christian-Charles de Plicque and Dave Forestfield, as well as, in the 90’s, when most active, with The Doobie Twisters, and nowadays working as the landlord of Väärni Vickarage known as a birthplace of the Finland’s national author Juhani Aho (author of e.g. Rautatie – Railway). This trio formed by Jarkka Rissanen, Jorma Välimäki and Jussi Kettunen interpret in a unique reduced way the classics from the blues, gospel and country music history. In addition to guitar, Jarkka takes care also of the vocal and harmonica parts.
Haaja and Agents in blue tone sounds. Agents & Vesa Haaja release a new album, “Blue” (Sony Music) on 26 August. This is the first studio album by the four-person line-up, renewed in the spring of 2015, consisting currently Vesa Haaja (vocals, rhythm guitarist), Esa Pulliainen (solo guitar), Kai Pulliainen (bass), Kepa Kettunen (drums). Contrary to Agents’ usual song setting, there are material sung both in Finnish and English, for example, tributes to Timo Jämsen (Kohtalon Tähti, or The Flaming Star) and to The Renegades (Ei mikään tuu ennalleen, or You’re Gonna Lose Her Loving). A digisingle taken from Danny’s repertoire in the 60’s Alla sateen öisen (= Below nocturnal rain) (comp. Jaakko Salo, lyrics Pertsa reponen) was released at the beginning of June (2016).
New Rockabilly discs from Helsinki and Tampere. The rockabilly trio The Rockanites has been working only just over a year in Helsinki, and now it has released its self-financed debut album “Great Shakes”. The releasing party was held at the Kontulan Bar Fiesta on July 2. At the end of the month the group will travel to show their skills to Czech Republic, at the CZ Rockabilly Rumble 2016 festival. Bassist-vocalist Tuomas Levonmaa now fronting the Rockanites, was earlier known as a.o. the bassist-vocalist in the Jolly Roger band, has changed his instrument to the guitar. The Tampere-based rockabilly trio Soil Senders’ new album consisting entirely its own songs titled “Keep It Up” is their third. Like its predecessors, CD’s publisher is the Pori-based Jungle Records. Soil Senders have been kicking for ten years, and it is formed by Juho Sassi (bassist-singer), Petri Pylvänen (drummer-singer), and Kalevi Manninen (guitarist).
Good luck and success. So called Finland Blues orchestra, Tyly Kohtalo, which has been operating from the 80’s around the Jyväskylä area, has released their second album sung in Finnish ”Onnee ja menestystä” (Good luck and success). All songs in this self-financed album from beginning to end are by the band members.
Aili, she just sings. The hot name in the Finnish jazz popular music in recent years Aili Ikonen is often connected to her theme album released in 2013 “Jazzbasilli” with HERD band, and to the Ella Fitzgerald tribute project implemented in the same year. Now Ikonen has released a full album in her own name, “Laulan” (I sing) (Groovy Records), in which she interprets songs written by herself and by Mikko Pellinen, the double bass player in the recording sessions. Pellinen has also been responsible for the arrangements of the songs. The album includes some cover versions in Finnish language, such as Michael Legrand’s What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? (Luonasi sun) and Ella Fitzgerald’s A-Tisket A-Tasket (Pussi ja passi). Other lyrisists on the album are Timo Kiiskinen, Kanerva Pasanen and Heidi Maria Paalanen.
Nono’s latest round. The admirably efficient publishing activities of Svart Records are now reaching to the blues, jazz and rock guitarist veteran Nono Söderberg and his recordings from the 70’s. An LP compilation of rarities “Pop-Liisa 5” recorded at the YLE’s Liisankatu studios will be released in August. In addition to Söderberg it also includes Jukka Hauru (guitar) and his band Super Kings. In September, Söderberg’s 1976 debut solo album, “Nono” will be released. Originally it appeared on the Hi-Hat label, and it will be available, both as colour vinyl and ordinary black vinyl pressings.
